About Us

After graduating from high school, John enrolled in Kentucky School of Mortuary Science in Louisville. After completing mortuary school, he returned to work for Hampton Funeral Service. In 1986, an opportunity to buy a partnership in Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Directors (a firm that had been in business since 1933) became a reality. Betty soon began working alongside John in the funeral home too. They worked there until an opportunity was given to them to move to Boiling Springs, South Carolina. 


In 1990, John began working for Forest Lawn Mortuary as a manager. He soon worked his way up to general manager of their three locations. Again, Betty was at his side working in the business office and helping where needed. In September 1995, they resigned from the Forest Lawn group to open their own funeral home. On January 2, 1996, Eggers Funeral Home opened its first location at 2610 Boiling Springs Road. Betty and John initially operated the firm with the help of Nancy Sproles, her husband Ron, and Tim Plummer.

In 1998, additional staff were added to the growing funeral home. Added were two brothers, Leonard and T.J. “Shorty” Jolley. Leonard had worked at Johnson’s Funeral Home in Chesnee, and both brothers had worked at Forest Lawn Mortuary. In the spring of 1999, work began on the current Boiling Springs facility at 195 Rainbow Lake Road. In July of 2000, Eggers moved into the new 14,000 sq. ft. facility.

It was also in 2000 that Betty graduated from Spartanburg Methodist College. She later became a licensed funeral director in 2003. In 2001, Eggers acquired the former Forest Lawn Mortuary of Chesnee, and in 2006, a crematory was added to the Chesnee location. In 2011, the Chesnee location received a major renovation and addition that doubled its size. In 2014, the Boiling Springs location also received a major renovation. In March 2016, Eggers acquired its third funeral home - the former McKinney-Landreth & Carroll Funeral Home in Cliffside, North Carolina.


John Eggers passed away suddenly on April 16, 2016. Betty continued to operate the funeral home until March 2020. Eggers Funeral Home is currently under new leadership. Tommy and Mary Pacolette Genoble are local to the Upstate. 


Tommy’s grandfather began Holcombe Funeral Home of Union in 1949; after 75 years, it is still owned and operated by the family today. Tommy has been a funeral director for over 30 years. He graduated from Gupton Jones College of Mortuary Science in Atlanta in 1986. Mary Pacolette is a former elementary school teacher and high school guidance counselor. She holds a Master’s degree from Winthrop and is now a licensed funeral director

Eggers Funeral Home is a member of the SC Funeral Directors Association, the Piedmont Group, the National Funeral Directors Association, and the Cremation Association of North America. Eggers has received the NFDA's Pursuit of Excellence Award (Chesnee location) since 2003 and was the first funeral home in Spartanburg to earn this award.

Eggers Funeral Homes was founded by John and Betty Eggers, natives of Boone, North Carolina. Betty is the former Betty Ragan and a daughter of the late James A. and Rose Edna Lewis Ragan. John was the son of the late John Brandon and Rachel Webster Eggers. Both John and Betty attended Wautauga High School and graduated in 1979.


John began working in the funeral industry while still in high school with Hampton Funeral Service in Boone. It was while working there that he realized that funeral service was his calling in life.
