William J Spencer

William Joseph Randall Spencer, 81, of Boiling Springs, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.

Born on May 30, 1944, in Durham, North Carolina, Bill was the beloved son of the late Mae and Phillip Rothstein and the late William Alonzo Spencer. Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 59 years, Carolyn Wommack Spencer; daughter, Karen Smith, and husband, Brent; son, Brian Spencer, and wife, Natasha; and 2 grandsons, Hudson and Maddox Smith.

Bill built a long and successful career in electronic satellite sales, traveling all along the East Coast — a region he could navigate without ever needing a map. Through his work, he not only helped build and grow his business but also changed lives. He took great pride in helping his business partners succeed and in bringing satellite television to rural areas across the East Coast. His efforts opened doors for countless families, giving them access to information, entertainment, and connection beyond the few local channels they once had.

Bill spent most of his life in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he made lifelong friends and raised his family. Later in life, he relocated to South Carolina to be closer to his daughter and her family. He always wanted to stay connected and look after the people he loved most.

Known for his sharp wit, warm laughter, and unforgettable personality, Bill loved to make people smile, tell a good joke, and light up any room he entered. He also loved to nag people just enough to get their attention — usually followed by that grin everyone knew was coming. A lifelong Tar Heel, he was always cheering for his beloved UNC teams — especially when they played North Carolina State.

Outside of work, Bill found peace and joy on the golf course and in his travels. He especially cherished time spent in Pinehurst, Chapel Hill, Hilton Head Island, and South Florida — places that captured his love of good weather, great golf, and a perfectly cooked steak at his favorite steakhouses.

To those who knew him best, Bill will be remembered for his humor, his generosity, and his adventurous spirit. He lived life on his own terms — full of laughter, stories, friendship, and love.

He will be deeply missed by his family and friends, but his stories, laughter, and legacy will live on in all who were lucky enough to know him.
