Thomas Alfred Smart

Thomas Alfred Smart, 83, of 1066 Mayfair Street, Spartanburg, died peacefully at home on Friday, June 27, 2025.

Alfred was born with a generous spirit and a heart full of kindness. Pop, as he was affectionately known, never met a stranger and was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. As a veteran of the US Army, his service and love for his country and God came through in how he lived his life daily.

Pop was a man who cherished family above all else and was always ready to help anyone who needed a hand with any task imaginable. Whether it be making a desk, installing tile or a new roof, or mending a deck, Pop left his mark on everyone that knew him.

His wife Alber M. Smart can attest to the love, patience and commitment he provided for 53 years.

Pop found joy in the little things—especially in the time he spent in his workshop, where he could always be found tinkering and piddling with his latest project and his love of baseball can be seen through his large collection of baseball cards.

The only thing that was equal to his devotion to his family was his unwavering faith. Thomas lived his life with humility, grace, kindness and a dedication to the Lord.

He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and service to others, and will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Thomas is survived by his wife, Alber M. Smart, a brother, Chris Smart; a sister, Elaine Motes; three daughters, Judy Foster-Garren (Billy), Diane M. Cody (Roy), Renee Montjoy (cats); Five grandchildren, Shannon F. Kemp, F. Douglas Foster, Jr., Casey Cole, Nicholas Foster, Kelly Human; Five great-grandchildren, Skyler Richter, Foster Kemp, Mason Kemp, Kylee Hanna, Asher Hattaway; nephew, Joel Smart - all of whom take comfort in the knowledge that he is now at peace with the Lord.

The family invites all who knew and loved Thomas to join in honoring his memory at Eggers Funeral Home, 195 Rainbow Lake Rd, Spartanburg, SC 29316 July 1 from12:00-1:00, service at 1:00pm and burial in Good Shepherd Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to your charity of choice in Thomas's name.
