Kay Smith Reid

Kay Smith Reid, 88, of Spartanburg, SC, passed away Friday, May 19, 2023.

Born in Memphis, TN, she was a daughter of the late Dr. Charles Edward Smith and Madge Singleton Smith. Mrs. Reid attended Hutchison School in Memphis, TN. She graduated from Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, VA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Edward Reid, Jr.

Mrs. Reid is survived by her three sisters, Charlene Smith Searight, Judy Smith Bechtel, and Vicky Smith Weber (Bill), four children, Klase Reid Gillespie, (Ken), William Edward Reid III (Melody), Charles Smith Reid (Kelly), and Richard Bentley Reid (Alison). Mrs. Reid is also survived by 9 grandchildren: Anna Reid Bowling, Caroline Reid Donaldson, Frances Reid Twomey, Kenneth Webb Gillespie, Mary Klase Gillespie, William Seth Reid, Charles Finley Reid, Bryson Cartwright Reid, and Addison Bentley Reid. Mrs. Reid was also a great-grandmother to Briggs Gillespie, Helen Bowling, Reid Bowling, Wilder Twomey and Finn Gillespie.

Mrs. Reid was an accomplished artist, studying with Curtis Harley. She enjoyed bird watching and gardening and loved spending time with her family. She was a member of the Spartanburg Garden Club, Debutante Club of Spartanburg, and the Spartanburg Junior League.

A memorial service to celebrate Mrs. Reid's life will be held at 2:30pm on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 in the Chapel at First Presbyterian Church Spartanburg. A reception will follow at the Piedmont Club.
