James Spencer Shadden

James Spencer Shadden, 77, passed away peacefully on August 11, 2026, surrounded by his family.

Born in Center, Texas, and raised in Nacogdoches, Texas, Jim devoted much of his life to serving others. He proudly served his country for 25 years in the United States Navy as a Hospital Corpsman, achieving the distinguished rank of Master Chief Petty Officer before retiring from military service. His dedication to caring for others continued after the Navy when he began a second career with the Texas Department of Health, where he worked as a case manager until his retirement.

While he was incredibly proud of his years of service and the career he built, the things that mattered most to him could never be measured by a title or rank. He loved Jesus, he loved his family, and those were the foundation of his life.

He was the proud father of three children; Michelle, LeAnne, and Rusty, and his family was one of his greatest blessings. He loved golfing and in his earlier years was an avid runner. He stayed active and always had a way of lighting up any room he entered. Time with Jim meant laughter, stories, and often a night of karaoke. But above all else, there was nothing he treasured more than time spent with the people he loved.

Jim faced the final chapter of his life with the same strength and determination that characterized so much of who he was. His family finds comfort in knowing that his earthly struggles are over and that he is now at peace in the presence of Jesus.

He was preceded in death by his father, Buren Shadden; his mother, Bernice Shadden; and his sister, Linda Surpas.

He is survived by his children, Michelle Shadden Gneisig and her husband, Tom; LeAnne Shadden Clemons and her husband, John; and James Russell Shadden and his wife, Holly. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Taylor Harrelson, Jessica Cook, Hunter Gneisig, Shelby Smith, Paige Cogdill, Thatcher Shadden, Gunnar Shadden, Halley Shadden, and Brooklyn Clemons; and his great-grandchildren, Easton Vance, Andrew Harrelson, John Cook, and Charles Harrelson, along with many other family members and friends who loved him dearly and will carry his memory with them.

His life was one of service; to his country, to others, to his family, and most importantly, to Jesus. After a lifetime of caring for and serving others, he is finally at rest.
