Harriet Wheeler

Alice "Harriet" Wheeler, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, church leader, and faithful servant of God went to her heavenly home on Monday, June 15, 2026, at the age of 99.

Born on August 11, 1926, in Kanabec Minnesota, Harriet was the oldest of six children born to John Harold Black and Phyllis Lucille Gould Black.  She grew up with a strong sense of family, faith and responsibility that would guide her throughout her life.

On June 3, 1953 Harriet married Frank Arthur Wheeler, in Spartanburg, South Carolina.  Harriet especially loved traveling across the United States with her husband during his years as a truck driver, cherishing the adventures, memories, and time they shared on the road together.

Harriet was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, John Black, Winfield ("Win") Black, Jewel Black, Malcolm ("Mac") Black and her sons, Terry Wheeler and Frank Wheeler.  She is survived by her youngest brother Duane Black, her daughters, Claudia Wheeler Humphries, Carolyn Wheeler Elston and husband, Howard and daughter-in-law, Karen Wheeler.  She is also survived by eight grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and an abundance of nieces and nephews.  Harriet had the best neighbors on Brown Street for over 20 years, Kateryn Castillo "Katie", and Francisco Zuniga "Poncho" that treated her as family.  Their children called her "Grandma".

A longtime member of Northbrook Baptist Church, Harriet was known as the oldest member and a faithful servant of God.  She sang in the church choir for more than 30 years, taught Sunday School, served as WMU Director, participated in a number of mission trips, volunteered faithfully with the church community Thanksgiving Meal and was a part of the Quilting Ministry.  Her life was a testimony to Christian service, compassion and dedication to her church family.

Above all, Harriet was known as a prayer warrior.  She faithfully lifted up family, friends and countless others in prayer, offering encouragement, strength, and hope to everyone she encountered. Her steadfast faith and gentle spirit left a lasting impact on all who knew her. During her days at Wesley Court, her telephone was her "link" to those she loved.

Harriet's legacy lives on through the generations of family she loved, the church she served, and the many lives she touched through her kindness and faith in God. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
