Dorothy Henderson Lockman

Mrs. Dorothy Henderson Lockman of Chesnee, SC entered into her heavenly home on April 1, 2024 at age 97. Born in Landrum, SC on September 11, 1926, Dorothy was the fourth of six girls born to Thomas Brodus and Virginia Layne Henderson. A graduate of the School of Nursing at Spartanburg General Hospital in 1947, Dorothy provided nursing care near Greenwood, SC. In 1948, Dorothy married William Douglas Lockman, an engineering student at Clemson University.

Upon her husband's graduation, Dorothy began her new career, raising three boys. James Charles was born in 1950, William Douglas, Jr. was born in 1952, and Keith Thomas was born in 1955. After two decades of dedicated motherhood, Dorothy re-entered the medical field to practice her nursing skills at Lowrance General Hospital in Lake Norman, NC, where she worked until her retirement.

In 1988, Doug and Dorothy moved from Lake Norman to Chesnee, SC to be closer to their roots, especially Dorothy's five sisters. In addition to spoiling grandchildren, Dorothy enjoyed listening to bluegrass music while learning to play the mountain dulcimer. Dorothy and her sister, Verle, spent a few years researching the Henderson and Layne families, in addition to the Lockmans. Doug and Dorothy traveled extensively, spending many months living in a travel trailer in the desert near Phoenix, Arizona.

After sixty-three years of marriage, the love of her life, William Douglas died in 2011. She provided the best nursing care for Doug as he fought dementia. Over the past four years, Dorothy fought the good fight as she battled dementia.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Verle Jenkins, Helen Bridges, Louise Foster, Amelia Wolfe, Mary Ethyl Nodine, and their spouses, and her son, William Douglas, Jr. and her grandson, Philip Douglas Lockman.

Dorothy is survived by her two sons, James Charles (Barbara) and Keith Thomas (Susan), grandchildren, Arden Lockman Cagle (Matt), Benjamin, Caroline and Rebekah Lockman, great grandchildren, Brenden Lockman, Natalie, Nyla, Nolan, and Weston Cagle, all of Charlotte, NC. Also, nieces and nephews and their families, Diane, Marsha, David, Steve, Debbie, Robin, Sandy, and Darlene.

Everyone who knew Dorothy loved her and will remember her lovely smile and demeanor. The Scripture says, "With long life I will satisfy him." At 97, Dorothy was satisfied.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00PM on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at Chesnee United Methodist Church.
