David Hester Walker

David Hester Walker, 85, of Chesnee, South Carolina, passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2026, at his home surrounded by his family.

Born February 11, 1941, in a log cabin on his family's farm in Chesnee, David was a son of the late William Nonnie Walker and Nellie Louise Blackwell Walker. He was the devoted husband of Sandra Jo Bonner Walker, with whom he shared 61 wonderful years of marriage. Sandra often said she loved David even before she ever met him, having heard stories about him around the community, and later remembered noticing his striking blue eyes at the local dragstrip. He faithfully wore the same wedding band throughout their 61 years together, a quiet reflection of his steady love and commitment to his family.

David was a well-known local entrepreneur and longtime owner of the Bantam Chef in Chesnee. His very first Bantam Chef was opened in the late 1960s in Chester and others followed in Rock Hill, York, Pacolet, Boiling Springs, and Marion, NC. For generations of area residents, the Bantam Chef of Chesnee was more than a restaurant. It was a gathering place and a centerpiece of community life where teenagers cruised, friendships were formed, and memories were made. In the early mornings, it was also a favorite gathering place for retired friends and neighbors who met for coffee and breakfast, sharing stories and keeping up with one another as they had for years.   Through his work there, David and his wife, Sandra, became a familiar and respected presence in the lives of countless families throughout the Chesnee community.

He was also widely known for his lifelong passion for Studebaker automobiles and vintage motorcycles, many of which became a recognizable part of the Bantam Chef's character and local charm. In February 2013, David made national news within the collector-car community when a devastating fire destroyed more than fifty of his Studebakers and other vehicles, he had carefully collected over decades. Though the loss was significant, his enthusiasm for classic cars and mechanical craftsmanship remained a defining part of his life and legacy.

A gifted "mechanical genius" and natural problem-solver, David could fix just about anything. He loved fast cars, motorcycles, and racing. Along with cars and motorcycles, he also collected radios and watches and took great pride in his remarkable collections. His son, David shared that his father was "tough as nails and never complained," a description that perfectly reflected his strength, resilience, and quiet determination throughout his life. His son, Travis, fondly remembered his Dad teaching him to ride a bicycle and the time and effort he devoted to instilling in him a strong work ethic. HIs daughter, Melissa, especially treasured that he always told her she was his "favorite daughter," a reflection of the special bond they shared.  Above all else, David loved his family deeply and especially treasured his role as a grandfather and great-grandfather.

In addition to his loving wife, Sandra, he is survived by his daughter, Melissa Walker Lawter, and husband, Ricky; sons, David Benjamin Walker, and wife, Kristi and Travis Bonner Walker; brother, Calvin Walker, and wife, Annette; grandchildren, Aaron Jones, David Dakota Sky Walker, Zoie Walker Lawter, India Henderson Walker, Phoenix Walker Lawter, and Rayna Ann Walker; great-grandchildren, Cassius Clay Jones, Kenzley Ann Lawter, and Oakley Jo Marie Lawter; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Helen Walker Burke and Glady Whiteside, and brothers, Hilton Walker, James Walker, and Rev. Fae Walker.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at First Baptist Mayo Church officiated by Rev. Glenn Rusher, Rev. Shane Ezell, and Rev. Corey Bridges. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:30 PM until 3:00 PM prior to the service. A private family burial will be held in the Arrowwood Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Mike Shuy, Gerald Whiteside, Kyle Atkins, Mike Lancaster, Paul Kelley, Timmy Burke, Ben Atkins, and Michael Burnett.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Youth Department of First Baptist Mayo Church 190 Mayo Road, Cowpens, SC 29330.

From his birth in a log cabin on his family's farm to his years welcoming generations of friends and neighbors at the Bantam Chef, David's life remained firmly rooted in the Chesnee community he loved and helped shape.
