Dr. Carlton Philip "Tad" Pryor

The following is merely a glimpse into the full, loving, and selfless life of an extraordinary man.

Dr. Carlton Philip "Tad" Pryor passed away on May 30, 2026, at the age of 72. He leaves behind a legacy of intellectual achievement, unwavering devotion to family, and a lifetime spent inspiring those fortunate enough to know him.

Tad was born on April 12, 1954, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Nancy-Jane Nagl Pryor and John Pryor. After spending his early childhood in Omaha, his family relocated to California, where his curiosity about the world around him began to flourish.

A gifted scholar from an early age, Tad achieved accomplishments that many only dream of. He earned his bachelor's degree from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) before continuing his studies at Harvard University, where he earned his Ph.D. He often remarked that Harvard was filled with two kinds of students: legacy students and those who worked tirelessly to get there. Tad was undoubtedly among the latter.

His passion for understanding the universe led him to a distinguished career as a professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Rutgers University. There, he spent decades educating students, conducting research, and sharing his wonder for the cosmos. He was also a proud member of The Planetary Society and remained a lifelong advocate for science, discovery, and education.

While Rutgers became the center of his professional life, it also became the place where he found the love of his life. Tad met Francis while they were both working at the university. Their friendship blossomed into a lasting partnership, and in 2005 they were married. Together they built a loving home in East Brunswick, New Jersey, where Tad embraced his role as husband, stepfather, grandfather, mentor, and friend.

Tad became a devoted stepfather to Jamie, Anthony, and Joseph. He was always willing to teach, guide, and encourage. Whether it was helping the children learn to drive or patiently teaching Anthony how to drive a manual transmission, he approached every lesson with patience and kindness.

Outside the classroom, Tad found joy in reading science fiction novels and observing the night sky through his trusted telescope at the Rutgers Physics and Astronomy Building on the Busch Campus, where his office was also located. The mysteries of the universe never ceased to amaze him.

Family was the center of Tad's life. Growing up, he shared a close bond with his younger brother, a relationship strengthened during family travels throughout Europe in the 1960s. Together they explored Stonehenge, ancient Roman and Greek ruins, and countless historic sites that helped shape their futures. Those experiences inspired his brother's career as an archaeologist and deepened their lifelong connection.

Tad was a warm and loving son who called his mother every single day. After his father's passing, he felt an even stronger calling toward family, and he embraced the large and loving family he gained through Francis. He became a cherished uncle, stepfather, grandfather, and friend.

In 2013, Tad proudly became a grandfather when Gabriela was born. Over the years, his family grew to include Filipe ("Mano"), Amari, Aries, and Amaya. He adored each of them and treasured every opportunity to attend soccer games, family gatherings, barbecues, holidays, and celebrations. His grandchildren brought him immeasurable joy, and he never missed an opportunity to support and encourage them.

Those who knew Tad will remember his quiet intelligence, gentle humor, generous heart, and remarkable ability to make others feel valued. Whether building wooden stools, sharing a barbecue with family, discussing science, or simply offering thoughtful advice, he enriched the lives of everyone around him.

One family member reflected:

"Thank you for everything and all the memories. Over these past seven years, I have been blessed to experience your wealth of knowledge firsthand. I think of building wooden stools in South River, spending time at Mano's soccer games, and all the barbecues shared with family. Thank you for your support, your wisdom, and your love."

Tad's brother shared a beautiful perspective inspired by Native American elders:

"They taught me that when someone passes away, they travel upward and become a star. When we feel their loss, we can reach up, grab that star, and bring it into our hearts. So, whenever you are missing Tad, go outside under the night sky, find his star, and bring it into your heart. Then he will always be with you."

As we mourn the loss of Dr. Carlton Philip "Tad" Pryor, we also celebrate a life exceptionally well lived—a life devoted to learning, family, kindness, and love.

Let us allow ourselves the vulnerability to grieve his passing and the strength to celebrate his life. He touched us all in ways we may still be discovering. May we use this time to honor his memory and find comfort in knowing how deeply he was loved.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM, Saturday, June 13, 2026, in the Eggers Funeral Home Chapel of Boiling Springs.
