Carl J Martin

SGT First Class Master Gunner Carl J. Martin, of Chesnee, South Carolina passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at the age of 71, in his home, after a short battle with cancer.

Mr. Martin was born in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, on October 30, 1953. The son of John J Martin and Marita Zim, Carl was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He served honorably in the Army for 21 years with a ranking of Sargent First Class, and Master Gunner with several medals including "Commendation Medal (5th Award) ","Achievement Medal (2nd Award)"," Good Conduct Medal (5th Award)", "Officers Professional Development Ribbon with Numeral 3","Service Ribbon", "Overseas Service Ribbon (3rd Award)" and " Expert Marksmanship Qualification". Following his military service with the army, Mr. Martin worked for The Department of Corrections as a correctional officer for 10 years, where he also retired. During his retirement Carl loved to garden, travel, and spend time with his family. Mr. Martin was a member of the American Legion post 48.

Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife, Darlene Martin; his daughters, Kimberly Charlton (Thomas Fishtorn) and Jessica Shelhamer; son, Joshua Shelhamer; sister, Suzanne Martin (Frank Merschbach); grandchildren, Elizabeth Hall/ Caretaker (Anthony Hall), Bryan H. Brant, Johnathan Brant (Kylee Jennings), James T. Hardy II, Randricous Nesbitt, Jr., and Savannah Kohl; great grandchildren, Keaton Hall, Maelee Hall, Ryder Hall, and Waylon Brant.

Mr. Martin was predeceased by his mother, Marita Zim; father, John J Martin; daughter, Jamie L. Shelhamer; son, Scott Lee; and great grandson, Dallas Brant.
