Mr. Bernard Henry Cantrell, 97 of 503 Saluda Street, passed away, Monday, February 19, 2018 at Mary Black Hospital in Spartanburg. Born December 10, 1920,he was a native of Chesnee, he was the widower of Marian Kate Gore Cantrell and the son of the late Leander Bishop Cantrell and Mary Emma Page Cantrell. Bernard served as a Corporal in the US Army and was a World War II veteran, serving in the South Pacific. He was a longtime member of Chesnee First Baptist Church and American Legion Post #48.
He is survived by his children, Glennis Neal (Jerry) and Geraldine "Geri" Smith (Clark); sisters, Sarah Wilson and Sylvia Mosely; grandchildren, Keri Smith, Laura Escobar (Adam), and Justin Smith; great-grandson, Lucas Bernard Escobar; step-grandson, Danny Neal; step great-grandchildren, Cierra Neal, Mathew and Lanie Escobar; and his step- great-great granddaughter, Zayla Matson.
In addition to his wife and parents, Bernard was preceded in death by 5 brothers and 2 sisters: JT, Winnie, Cecil, Ligon, Frank, Vera Champion and JoAnn Stewart Penfield.
The family will receive friends on Friday, February 23, 2018 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Eggers Funeral Home of Chesnee. Funeral services will be on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church of Chesnee with Dr. Gary Grogan and Dr. Curtis Daniels officiating. Interment will follow in Springhill Memorial Gardens with military honors.
