Who We Are

We have years of experience caring for families from all walks of life. Each family comes to us because they know we are leaders in our profession, dedicated to excellence in service, and have the highest integrity.

When we sit down with a family, we have only one goal: to create a memorable, yet affordable service for their loved one. Together, we explore the variety of services and products we offer, as well as provide a wealth of creative ideas and suggestions. At Eggers, we strive to design a service that suits our families' needs both now and in the future. Families who come to us know that years from now, they will have deep peace-of-mind because in coming to us, they've done their best to honor their loved one.

  • Our History

John and Betty Eggers are natives of Boone, North Carolina. Betty is the former Betty Ragan and a daughter of the late James A. and Rose Edna Lewis Ragan. John is the son of Rachel Webster Eggers and the late John Brandon Eggers. Both John and Betty attended WautaugaHigh School and graduated in 1979.

While still in high school, John began working for Hampton Funeral Service in Boone, which was owned by Barney and Deloris Hampton. His first jobs were washing cars, cutting grass, and putting up tents. As time passed on, John began proving himself and was able to work his way to the more meaningful tasks. He then realized that funeral service was his calling and what he wanted to do in life. After talking with Mr. Hampton about how he felt about the business, Mr. Hampton began to groom him for funeral service.

After graduation, he enrolled in Kentucky School of Mortuary Science in Louisville. After the completion of mortuary school, he then returned to work for Hampton Funeral Service. In 1986, an opportunity to buy a partnership in Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Directors (a firm that had been in business since 1933) became a reality. Betty soon began working alongside of John in the funeral home too. They worked there until a new opportunity was given to them to move to Boiling Springs, South Carolina.

In the spring of 1990, John began working for the Forest Lawn Mortuary as a manager. He soon worked his way up to general manager over their three locations. Again, Betty was at his side working in the business office and helping where needed. In September 1995, they resigned from Forest Lawn group to open their own funeral home. On January 2, 1996, Eggers Funeral Home opened its first location at 2610 Boiling Springs Road.

With this new funeral home, Betty and John, along with Nancy Sproles (a licensed funeral director), her husband, Ron, and Tim Plummer realized their dreams were turning into a reality. Nancy and Tim were with them from the very early planning stage. The Eggers have often said that they could never have started the business without the help of the friends that served alongside of them and volunteered their services. They truly helped to make their business a success.

In 1998, more staff was added to the growing funeral home. Added were two brothers, Leonard and T.J. “Shorty” Jolley. Leonard had worked at Johnson’s Funeral Home in Chesnee, and both brothers had worked at Forest Lawn Mortuary. They have been an asset to the business as well as friends. Later, in the fall of 1998, Eggers began looking for a site to build a new funeral home that would accommodate the facility that was needed. The Krupa Design Group of Columbus, Ohio put together the building plan, and in the spring of 1999, work began on the current Boiling Springs facility at 195 Rainbow Lake Road. In July of 2000, Eggers was able to move into the new 14,000 sq. ft. facility. Also in 2000, Betty graduated from Spartanburg Methodist College. She then became a licensed funeral director in 2003.

Eggers Funeral Home is a member of the SC Funeral Directors Association, the Piedmont Group, the National Funeral Directors Association, and the Cremation Association of North America. We have recieved the NFDA's Pursuit of Excellence Award since 2003, and were the first funeral home in Spartanburg to earn this award.
